Lakefront Work on Lake James

Lake James is Indiana's fourth-largest natural lake, and most of its 1,229 acres sit inside Pokagon State Park near Angola. That state park frontage puts a different set of eyes on shoreline work than any other lake we serve, on top of the moisture, winter ice, and soft soil that come standard with a natural lake.

James is really three connected basins, plus the smaller lakes in its own chain: Jimmerson, Snow, Big Otter, and Little Otter. Homeowners on the park side of the lake share a fence line with a state facility, so placement and materials matter to the DNR as much as they do to a neighbor.

Josh Knisely has built lakefront fencing and railing across northern Indiana since 2009, including plenty of jobs bordering Pokagon's public shoreline. On a lake like James that means anchoring for sandy, saturated ground at the water and picking a look that clears both a homeowner's expectations and the park's.

DNR Shoreline Rules on Lake James

Lake James is a public freshwater lake, so Indiana Code 14-26-2 applies statewide. Any structure within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark, fence or railing included, needs an Indiana DNR LARE permit before it goes in, whether your lot borders Pokagon State Park or a private stretch of shoreline.

That review runs through the DNR Lake and River Enhancement program and takes longer during the busy summer season. We start the paperwork early and confirm clearance before the first post hole.

Set back from the water, local county permit rules take over, and every post still has to clear Indiana's frost line to avoid heaving through the winter.

Building at the Edge of a State Park

Wood near the water looks fine for a few years, then the moisture wins. The end grain swells, the posts soften at the base, and the railing turns into a summer project. That failure happens faster on James than on a typical inland yard, since its three basins keep humidity high right at the shoreline.

Aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl are what we use instead. Aluminum won't rust or need repainting, which matters on a shoreline that's partly public parkland and sees more foot traffic than a private lake. Vinyl with an aluminum core holds its shape across long runs instead of bowing in summer heat.

Shoreline soil on James is soft and shifts with the seasons, so posts go in deeper than a standard yard fence and get anchored for the ground we find on site, not a generic spec. That's what keeps a railing from leaning after the first hard winter, on the park side of the lake or Jimmerson's quieter shore.

Common Lake James Projects

Dock and Deck Railing

Aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl railing built to code for the humidity and winter ice that come with James' three connected basins.

Shoreline Fencing with Water Access

Bank fencing with a lockable gate to the water, planned around sightlines to the park and the lake rather than a generic property line.

Bank and Erosion-Prone Runs

Deeper post settings and adapted anchoring for James' soft, saturated shoreline soil, including lots that border Pokagon State Park.

Privacy Screening Between Lakefront Lots

Vinyl panels set back from the water for lots on Jimmerson, Snow, and the other lakes in the James chain where neighbors sit close together.

Lake James Fencing Questions

Do I need a permit for a fence on Lake James?
If it's within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark, yes. Indiana Code 14-26-2 requires a DNR LARE permit for shoreline structures on any public freshwater lake, including the stretch bordering Pokagon State Park. Set-back fences follow Steuben County rules instead.
What fencing lasts longest on Lake James?
Aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl. Both resist the humidity that comes off James' three basins and hold their line through winter ice, more than wood or bare steel can promise at the shoreline.
How deep do posts go on a Lake James shoreline lot?
Deeper than a standard yard, since the soil right at the water is soft and shifts with the seasons. We set below the frost line and anchor for the specific ground on your bank, whether that's the main lake or Jimmerson, Snow, or one of the Otter lakes.
Can you add railing to an existing Lake James dock?
Yes. We check the dock's condition, choose a railing system and attachment that fit, and install to safety standards. Most dock railing goes in within a day.
