“They did a great job installing our aluminum fence. Josh was easy to work with and he made sure we were happy every step of the way.”
Lakefront Fencing & Railing on Lake Tippecanoe
Shoreline fencing, dock and deck railing, and gate access built for Lake Tippecanoe's Kosciusko County waterfront. Materials chosen to survive constant moisture and winter ice.
Lakefront Work on Lake Tippecanoe
Lake Tippecanoe is the deepest natural lake in Indiana, dropping to 122 feet at its deep hole and holding the clearest water of any lake in the county. That depth and clarity come from spring-fed basins, but they don't do a fence any favors: constant humidity, winter ice movement, and direct water contact chew through standard materials years before they should fail.
On the last Tippecanoe project we finished near North Webster, the previous wood railing had rotted through in about eight years, a fast failure even by lake standards. We replaced it with aluminum-reinforced vinyl that shrugs off the moisture and holds its line through the freeze-thaw swing.
Josh Knisely has worked Kosciusko County lakes since 2009, and Tippecanoe's mix of private cottages, marinas, and country club shoreline means no two jobs look alike. What stays constant is knowing how deep to set posts in that soft shoreline soil and when a project needs Indiana DNR review before anyone starts digging.

Shoreline Rules and DNR Permits on Lake Tippecanoe
Tippecanoe is a public freshwater lake, so Indiana Code 14-26-2 applies. Any structure within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark, including a fence or a railing, needs a permit from the Indiana DNR before it goes in.
That review runs through the DNR Lake and River Enhancement (LARE) program, and the timeline stretches during the spring and summer rush. We start the paperwork early and confirm clearance before the first post hole. On our last Tippecanoe job we handled the permitting end to end so the homeowner never had to.
Set back from the water, standard Kosciusko County rules take over. Fences over 6 feet need a local permit, and every post has to clear the 36 to 42 inch frost line.
What Holds Up in Indiana's Deepest Lake
Tippecanoe's depth keeps the water cold and the humidity high right through summer, which is exactly the environment wood can't handle. Most wood railings on this lake are a maintenance headache by year six and a full replacement by year ten.
We steer Tippecanoe owners toward aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl instead. Aluminum won't rust or need repainting, which matters on a lake this exposed. Vinyl with an aluminum core holds its shape across long runs rather than bowing in the summer heat.
The shoreline itself is soft and prone to erosion, especially near the inlets where Grassy Creek and the Tippecanoe River feed in from the Barbee chain and James Lake. Posts here go deeper than a standard yard fence and get anchored for that moving ground, the difference between a railing that stays put and one that leans by the second winter.
Common Lake Tippecanoe Projects
Dock and Deck Railing
Aluminum-reinforced vinyl railing built for elevated, dock-level decks near the country club and marina shoreline, with continuous grab rails on every stair run.
Shoreline Fencing with Water Access
Low fencing along the bank with a lockable gate down to the water, sized to keep the view of the lake's clear water open while marking the lawn edge.
Bank and Erosion-Prone Runs Near the Inlets
Deeper post settings and adapted anchoring where Grassy Creek and the Tippecanoe River feed the lake, the softest and most erosion-prone ground on the shoreline.
Privacy Screening Between Cottages
Vinyl privacy panels set back from the water for the close-set cottage lots common around North Webster and Leesburg.

Lake Tippecanoe Fencing Questions
- Do I need a permit for a fence on Lake Tippecanoe?
- Likely two permits. Structures within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark need an Indiana DNR LARE permit under Indiana Code 14-26-2, and set-back fences over 6 feet also need a Kosciusko County permit. We handle both from the first site visit.
- What fencing lasts longest on Tippecanoe's shoreline?
- Aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl hold up best against Tippecanoe's humidity and winter ice. Wood and bare steel hardware tend to fail well before either of those materials starts to show wear.
- How deep do posts go on a Tippecanoe lake lot?
- Deeper than a typical yard fence, especially near the inlets where Grassy Creek and the Tippecanoe River feed the lake. We set below the 36 to 42 inch frost line and anchor for the soft ground we find on your bank.
- Can you add railing to my existing Tippecanoe dock?
- Yes. We check the dock's condition, pick a railing system that fits, and install to safety standards. Most dock railing goes in within a day.
