Solid Wood Panel

Board-on-Board
Alternating boards on both sides of the rail give partial privacy from every angle and let more air through than a solid panel. Available in vinyl or wood.
Shadowbox
A variation on board-on-board with a small gap between boards, softening the look from both sides while keeping most of the privacy. A common HOA-approved choice.
How Tall Should Your Privacy Fence Be?
Six feet is the standard privacy height for a residential backyard in Northern Indiana. A sloped yard changes how the fence gets built. On a slope, we either step the panels, where each section stays level and drops down the hill in stages, leaving small triangular gaps at the bottom, or rack the panels, where the whole panel angles to follow the ground and keeps a continuous bottom line. Racking looks more even from a distance. Stepping is more common with rigid vinyl panels that can't flex. We'll recommend the right approach once we see your yard.
Posts Set Below the Frost Line
Indiana has a 36-inch frost line, which is how deep the ground freezes in a hard winter. Every post on your privacy fence gets set below that depth, in concrete. A post set too shallow gets pushed up and out of alignment as the ground freezes and thaws each winter, a problem called frost heave. It's the most common reason a privacy fence starts leaning within a few years, and it's entirely preventable with a properly dug post hole.
