Lakefront Work on Lake James
Lake James is Indiana's fourth-largest natural lake, and most of its 1,229 acres sit inside Pokagon State Park near Angola. That state park frontage puts a different set of eyes on shoreline work than any other lake we serve, on top of the moisture, winter ice, and soft soil that come standard with a natural lake.
James is really three connected basins, plus the smaller lakes in its own chain: Jimmerson, Snow, Big Otter, and Little Otter. Homeowners on the park side of the lake share a fence line with a state facility, so placement and materials matter to the DNR as much as they do to a neighbor.

DNR Shoreline Rules on Lake James
We've filed this permit on more Lake James lots than any other lake we work, on both sides of the property line that borders Pokagon State Park. Indiana Code 14-26-2 applies statewide to public freshwater lakes, so anything within 10 feet of the ordinary high water mark, fence or railing included, needs an Indiana DNR LARE permit before it goes in, whether you're on park-adjacent ground or a private stretch of shoreline.
That review runs through the DNR Lake and River Enhancement program and takes longer during the busy summer season. Because part of the shoreline borders Pokagon itself, we loop in the park early and get the paperwork moving before anyone breaks ground.
Set back from the water, local county permit rules take over, and every post still has to clear Indiana's frost line to avoid heaving through the winter.
Building at the Edge of a State Park
Wood near the water looks fine for a few years, then the moisture wins. The end grain swells, the posts soften at the base, and the railing turns into a summer project. That failure happens faster on James than on a typical inland yard, since its three basins keep humidity high right at the shoreline.
For James we lean on aluminum and aluminum-reinforced vinyl. Both handle the moisture and the extra foot traffic that comes with sharing a shoreline with a state park. Neither one rusts or needs repainting. A vinyl rail with an aluminum core also holds a straight line across a long dock run, since the metal channel carries the span instead of leaving it to the vinyl.
Soil at the water's edge shifts through the year with James' seasonal swings, so we set posts well past what a standard yard fence needs and anchor each one to the ground we actually find that day, whether that's the sandy stretch inside Pokagon or the firmer bank around Jimmerson. Skip that step and a rail starts leaning before the second winter is over.
